Film Favourites: Summer 2020

My best film photos are always taken in the summer. The energetic and vibrant energy of the warmest season is always reflected in the rolls that I produce. Plus, longer days mean more opportunity for beautiful light.

There’s no doubt that this summer has been unlike any other. With everything going on, it’s been challenging to shoot more since the places I go to and the people I see are limited. Although far from the ordinary, I think I’ve made the most out of the last months. Here are some of my favourite photos:

I took these photos while filming for my favourites video back in July. Making videos has been a great creative outlet for me. The new format makes me flex my creative muscles since I’m still learning the techniques and pace of compelling videos.

Lately, I’ve also been reflecting on how creating content on the internet is truly invaluable. Not only do I develop my creative thinking and skills, I also have to constantly fight off self-doubt and insecurity every time I make a video go live or publish a blog post. It’s a hard but rewarding practice.

On this day, I was working on a design assignment as a part of my job application for my current position. I remember feeling anxious about being at a lavender farm while my incomplete assignment was waiting for me.

Working as a full-time graphic designer teaches me a lot about my own creative capacity and process. I produce my best work when I’m well-rested and in tune with my intuition.

Looking back now, I bet that the break from my computer probably helped me design better for my assignment.

I also spent a lot of time hiking this summer with my friend Leah. We would talk about everything on our hikes. It was a good workout for the body and the brain.

I think I’ve expressed my love for my Kindle on all social platforms except this blog. Well, here it goes: I love my Kindle. It’s a picnic- and life essential.

I filmed a look book that never saw the light of day. I have yet to establish a flow from ideation to execution when making videos.

Sometimes I think of a great idea, but fall flat on execution. I have a lot of unused footage. Maybe I should make a video or write a blog post about my failed ideas.

I have more photos from this summer that I’d like to share in separate posts. I’ve been watching a lot of film photographers on Youtube who encourage me to learn the technical aspects of photography. I know that I have so much more to learn, but I’m looking forward to getting better with every roll and every photo.
